How to Become a Sustainable Clothing Manufacturer
Becoming a sustainable company is on most companies' to-do lists. Some take the longer route and implement systems for a greener, more worker-friendly environment, while others make it easy for themselves through greenwashing and inaccurate reporting. In this article you will learn to recognize sustainable clothing manufacturers.
How to Find Ethical Clothing Manufacturers
When thinking about how to find sustainable and ethical
apparel manufacturers, ask each potential supplier you contact the following 3
things:
- Substance certificates (OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GRS)
- International standards and certificates for social responsibility
- Factory tours
It goes without saying that the factories you work with have
to be ethical clothing manufacturers to be truly sustainable. Don't forget
sustainable fashion = ethical fashion. There should be no child or forced labor
in the factories of your prospective suppliers.
If the clothing manufacturers you found advertise as
sustainable, they should at least have certificates for the fabrics,
haberdashery, dyes and sublimation inks they use. The most common are OEKO-TEX
100, OEKO-TEX 1000, GOTS and GRS. We will cover them all in detail in a few
scrolls here.
The best can show you that they have certificates of social
responsibility and / or international standards.
But even if they have it all, if they refuse to show you
their factories, stay away. Something very suspicious is happening. That being
said, you can always visit our two factories in Serbia. And we have the ISO
standard certificates (9001, 14001 and 45001). All three themes can be seen
here.
Find sustainable and ethical apparel manufacturers, from
scratch
A good place to start, like any other, is Google search.
This search engine has provided more and more relevant search results with each
algorithm update, which means there is a good chance you will find ethical
manufacturers this way.
There are also good database websites. We find the Common
Objective platform particularly interesting. Manufacturer profiles can contain
a lot of information, especially with regard to sustainability. You can find
information from the manufacturer on decent working conditions, animal-friendly
practices, energy and water efficiency, chemical management, pollution
reduction, recycling and waste, etc. Certified manufacturers will upload their
certificates to their profiles.
OEKO-TEX certified yarns, fabrics and colors: pillars of
sustainable clothing manufacturers
The sustainability of any clothing brand starts with their
supply chain. Therefore, to have a sustainable clothing brand, you need to
partner with sustainable clothing manufacturers. You would definitely be using
materials that do not contain any toxic chemicals. OEKO-TEX certificates are
solid proof of this.
If you find a clothing factory that has OEKO-TEX
certificates for their yarns, haberdashery dyes and sublimation inks, you are
on the right track.
This certificate ensures that the end product does not
contain any toxic chemicals. Find out more about the OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
FUSH˚ has this certificate for all of the above. If OEKO-TEX
certification is your most important sustainability concern, you can send us an
inquiry now.
Certificates that guarantee recycled and organic materials
Recycled fabrics
The clothing factory should be able to issue you GRS
certificates for the fabrics they source or manufacture. If they take over the
fabric production, they must have GRS-certified yarns. Otherwise, they are less
likely to make clothes from recycled polyester fabrics.
The GRS certificate guarantees that the yarn, and therefore
the fabric, is made from recycled plastic. This is very important when looking
for activewear manufacturers. That's because they use more polyester
fabric than other suppliers.
